Why is a storm detector necessary in a tourist resort?

A great number of tourist resorts, due to their characteristics and location, are exposed to a high risk of lightning strike. It comprises hotels with large open areas, that count with woodlands and are nearby the coastline. This means having prominent elements along the land which increase the risk of a lightning strike. Furthermore, those located in tropical regions have a greater risk of atmospheric electric discharges, according to data collected from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

How does a storm detector work?

ATSTORM® storm detector system measures the electrostatic and electromagnetic field in the area to be protected. Local monitoring is carried out by means of two types of sensors which evaluate the risk of a thunderstorm:

Monitoring of the electrostatic field allows detecting the conditions previous to the formation of the thunderstorm above the resort. Monitoring of the electromagnetic field enables the detection of active thunderstorms approaching in a distance radius of 40 km.

The joint action of both sensors provides a greater alarm reliability, allowing to adjust them to the necessary time in advance to carry out the preventive measures by the user of the system.

Advantages of an ATSTORM® storm detector

The technology used in the sensors doesn’t contain moving mechanical parts, thereby avoiding blockages, wears and breakdowns. The result is a completely autonomous and automatic system.

Real time monitorization is available in an uninterrupted way thanks to the M2M global communication system (within the framework of IoT technologies), which allows the continuous data update to the servers for processing.

ATSTORM® system uses self-learning tools, so it processes and analyses the data obtained to improve its algorithms and therefore its forecasts. This way, a better adaptation to the specific features of each location is achieved and in consequence alarm performance is improved.

The people responsible for the system can access from any location to a private web portal where they can check the situation of the resort. The system also allows to consult historic data from previous years.

There are various notification alert systems, which allow a flexible control management. The system counts with an App with push alerts for the mobile phone (providing an immediate control of the lightning strike risk on the premises), an email system and an automation system through remote relay modules which enables the activation/ deactivation of the alarm systems, warning sirens…

The power supply is completely autonomous: it’s equipped with solar panels for its absolute autonomy. Moreover, it has a built-in battery and an additional source of AC supply which acts as a back-up system ensuring that it is always functioning properly.
